Spanish Visas and Work Permits
Our tax guide for freelance contractors working in Spain
Spain is applying restrictions to its labour market to nationals of Bulgaria and Romania but it intends to apply a shorter transitional period to Bulgarian and Romanian workers than the one laid down in the Treaty of Accession: consequently this transitional period will be for a maximum period of 2 years from 1st January 2007.
Spain does not apply any restrictions on the access to its labour market by citizens of other EU countries, including nationals from the new EU member States (previous restrictions on eight of the ten new member States - the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia – were lifted with effect from 1st May 2006). Citizens from all other countries need to go through a full work permit and residence permit application and it is fair to say that the expansion of the EU has made it more difficult for non-EU nationals to obtain work permits.
