All foreigners require a work permit to work in Croatia.
Work permits – usually valid for one year initially – have to be applied for by the Croatian employer. Once a work permit has been obtained the foreigner has to ask for a temporary residence permit at a Croatian embassy or consulate.
Unemployment rates in Croatia are high, so opportunities for foreign workers as employees of Croatian companies are limited.
A business permit can be issued to a foreigner who has a registered trade or a free lance profession or runs the affairs of a company in which he has a majority holding or to a foreigner who is sent by his foreign employer to provide services to a Croatian client.
Before applying for a business permit, the individual has to obtain a temporary residence permit at a Croatian Embassy or Consulate. The procedure may take several months. Thereafter, the business permit can be applied for at the Police Station nearest to the individual’s place of residence in Croatia. The first business permit is issued for one year and can be extended for up to two years at a time.
