How do I go about finding accommodation locally?
Moving abroad
Moving abroad for work is usually an exciting time, but finding accommodation can be very stressful, especially if you have a family. Without a doubt, carefully preparing your move well in advance can diminish the stress of finding the right place to live.
Sometimes accommodation will be provided by your employer, but if not, you may have to go through a lot of hassle when you start looking.
Some hints to make your life easier:
- Learn as much as possible about the region you are going to and the neighbourhood in which you plan to live.
- Keep to your set budget and to your standard accommodation. You might even save some money if going to a cheaper country (see Mercer’s cost of living index)!
- Do you want to live amongst local people? How well do you speak the language? Is there an expatriate community in the region?
- Think of your family's needs. If you have children, finding a home near the right school is essential.
- Look for expat internet sites or ask the British Embassy for some advice.
- Your future employer and colleagues abroad may also provide some help and advice.
