Do I need a medical card when working abroad?
Medical arrangements
This will depend upon the country in which you are working.
If you are registered for local social security where you are working you may be issued with a card from that country’s healthcare provider.
If you are detached from your home country’s social security system you will probably need so show an E101, EHIC and in some countries an E106 (for family members). These cover the aspects relating to basic cover through the local social security system or E101.
If necessary, you will need to take out private health care to cover extreme sports or emergency repatriation, at which point you will be provided with a card which you will need to carry at all times.
